Background of the Study (200 words)
Faith-based organizations (FBOs) hold considerable sway in shaping social values and norms. In Ondo East Local Government Area, Ondo State, these organizations play a dual role: they provide social services while also influencing gender equity perceptions. FBOs have been instrumental in advocating for women’s rights in education, health, and economic empowerment (Afolabi, 2023). However, some religious doctrines and practices can also reinforce traditional gender roles that limit women’s participation in leadership and decision-making (Segun, 2024). The evolving discourse on gender equity within religious contexts has prompted renewed interest in understanding how FBOs can be agents of change (Temitope, 2025). This study critically examines the role of FBOs in promoting gender equity, analyzing both their progressive initiatives and the challenges they face. It explores how religious teachings are interpreted and implemented in ways that can either advance or impede gender equity. By incorporating perspectives from community members, religious leaders, and policy analysts, the research provides a nuanced view of the influence of faith on gender relations (Olu, 2023).
Statement of the Problem (100 words)
In Ondo East, while some faith-based organizations actively promote gender equity, others inadvertently reinforce traditional gender roles that restrict women’s empowerment. This dichotomy creates inconsistencies in the implementation of gender-equitable practices within the community (Adedayo, 2024). The lack of a coherent framework within FBOs to reconcile religious beliefs with modern gender equity standards has resulted in mixed outcomes. This study addresses the gap by examining how FBOs can more effectively contribute to gender equity without compromising their core values (Babatunde, 2025).
